Hong Kong Cha Can Ting

The origin of Hong Kong-style tea cafes dates back to the times of the British colony. Then, people in Hong Kong, influenced by the British lifestyle, started drinking English black tea and coffee with milk. Thereafter, the styles of the Chinese(Hong Kong) and Western, co-existed and you have a kind of eatery restaurant which combines the styles of Chinese(Hong Kong) and Western food. The Hong Kong-style tea cafe trend only started in Singapore late 2005-early 2006. There were just one or two of such Hong Kong tea cafes in Singapore back in 2005-2006. To-date, there are more. Similarly a British colony, the Hong-Kong tea cafe culture did not reach Singapore till of late. I wonder why.
The practice of sharing table is quite common in Hong Kong, due to lack of space and prime land. Don't be shy if you want good food. Most widely and postively reviewed eateries and restaurants are crowded. The chance of sharing table is high. On both occasions to Australian Dairy Company, we(group of two) shared seating at a four-seat table. On visits to another famous Chinese reataurant, we even shared seating at a 10-seat round table. Well, in Hong Kong...time is money. Space is money too. Prime space is so precious that they don't even want to have one seat left vacant

Neighbourhood style roast meat at Wanchai Hong kong

Time to dip our toes into the vast array of Chinese cuisine on our doorstep, with some good old siu mei fan (燒味飯), or “roast meat/item rice”. Never having tried the siu mei specialist, kay kay , I picked the nearest one which is opposite my hotel, the wharney guangdong hotel in wanchai.

The roast pork was tender but predominantly salty and a bit dark, with a soggy layer of fat. The skin was starting to soften but still a bit crunchy. I think it could’ve been firmer and just a bit more on the lean side

Thai Food at Wan Chai Hong kong

Today, Wan Chai is a very busy commercial district. New high-rise commercial buildings are built on the northern shoreline where the sea was reclaimed. Wan Chai has many small Thai owned business such as Thai restaurants,
Wan Chai is most famous for the girlie bars and drinking nights out but I thought I put in a plug for an excellent Thai Restaurant (our favorite in Hong Kong) called Thai Farmers Restaurant, located at 98 Lockhart. Its a small shop but worth the search. This place consistently serves as close to 'Thai' food from 'Thailand' as we can find in Hong Kong. They use Thai staff and chefs as well.

Lan Fa Thai Restaurant at Macau

Everything you see at the table comes from Thailand, including part of the staff and kitchen team in the restaurant. Beautiful and authentic Thai delicacies.

In the menu, it features all the Thai favourites from different regions from Yam Som-O (herbed pomelo salad with prawns), Phad Thai Kai Hor (Thai rice noodles with prawns wrapped in an egg net), Kho Soi Gai (Northern style egg noodle with chicken and curry sauce), to Poo Phad Pong Garee (Stir-fried crab in yellow curry powder) and Goong Mungkorn Phad Prik Thai Dum (Stir-fried lobster with onion, capsicum and black pepper sauce), all prepared to a wonderful standard. We also feature a special menu of infused Thai teas, including lemongrass tea and the traditional Thai iced tea.
